Baker Faire: A Pop-up Bakeshop Featuring Honolulu Pastry Chefs and Bakers

One of my favorite things about food writing is promoting Honolulu’s food businesses, restaurants and chefs. But I have a particularly soft spot for sweets and pastry chefs. I started my culinary career in pastry, zesting a hundred pounds of lemons for Miette Patisserie in San Francisco.
Then, recently, I was chatting with Michelle Karr-Ueoka, pastry chef at MW restaurant, and we discovered a shared dream: gathering pastry chefs and bakers to celebrate pastries in this town, from creative to classic, from down home to haute. Before I started writing for HONOLULU, I used to organize a lot more of these kinds of events, and this one I couldn't resist: Imagine going to one place and loading up on pastries from seven different chefs and bakers—that’s Baker Faire. It’s not a HONOLULU Magazine-sponsored event, just something we’re doing for fun.
So for Saturday, we’ve got seven chefs and bakers participating:
- Alejandro Briceno, formerly of Prima and V Lounge, who’s currently launching a new concept, Pai
- Mark Freischmidt of the Halekulani
- Michelle Karr-Ueoka of MW restaurant
- Kimberly Oi of Pili Group
- Chris Sy of Breadshop
- Lee Anne Wong of Koko Head Café
- Alison Yokouchi of The Pig and the Lady at KCC Farmers Markets
Expect croissants, baklava, a pineapple upside down crostata, peach and ginger sticky buns, and some savory items, like kimchee scones. There will be coffee, too, by The Curb. All items will be priced individually, with everything less than $10, so you can assemble the best bakery box ever. See you there!
