If there were one street your dentist would recommend you stay away from, it might be 12th Avenue in Kaimuki. In just one year, three new sweet spots have moved into the two blocks makai of Waialae. Where there was just the longtime neighborhood bakery Sconees, now there are four places to get your sugar fix:

  • Last summer, Otto Cake moved from Chinatown to Kaimuki. No matter where it's located, it's home to our favorite cheesecakes in town. Here, cheesecake flavors range from the Amazing Plain to Chinese almond cookie and everything in between.

  • Via Gelato, an adorable gelato cafe, took over the Covenant Books space, which most food lovers knew for its soups rather than its Christian books. Via Gelato actually also sells some sandwiches and a daily soup, but that's not why we come. We come for gelato flavors like ume strawberry, cereal milk and black sesame. Judging from the lines in the evenings, Via Gelato hits the neighborhood's sweet spot. [Note: Via Gelato is closed for vacation until July 18]

  • Chocolate and Vanilla is the newest of the bunch. Underscoring its name, it's a no-frills bakery of comfort sweets like cupcakes and brownies. In the vicinity of maple bacon cheesecake and green tea oreo gelato, Chocolate and Vanilla might be overshadowed by its sexier neighbors.

  • The main draw at Sconees is the scones, and it's been that way since 1999. They remind us more of sweet biscuits than the afternoon tea type of scone, but that's the way Sconees regulars like 'em. Also try the fruit pockets, little half moons that taste like Pop Tarts.
