Open house pick of the week: Maunalani Heights

You don't have to think as much about moving to a less-smoky neighborhood, now that the fireworks ban is in effect (although you know there will still be illegal aerials for some time). Why not get a home with a view, so you can watch the fireworks—legal and otherwise—for all occasions?

There’s an open house on Nihipali Pl. this Sunday that may fit the bill, located just below Maunalani Park just off Sierra Dr. (Click here for more details.) The home has a rim lot setting that encompasses views of downtown Honolulu, Honolulu Harbor, the Waianae mountain range, and across to the Koolaus and Palolo Valley.

Views aside, the one element that really caught my eye was the custom tiled lap pool, surrounded by lush tropical landscaping and a view deck. The deck and the open cover give it a dramatic look, not to mention this is great for staying in shape for the new year.

The owner just invested more than $100,000 in upgrades including a new master bathroom, half bath, granite kitchen countertops, induction cook top and more...even a custom driveway. There is a separate one-bedroom guest suite with living room, bedroom, bath and kitchen, as well.

It's got an open floor plan that's designed to be flexible, so you can create three different living areas if you want. Some of the features include hardwood flooring, rough sawn wood walls and floors, fireplace and photovoltaic system.

It's also convenient, as it is walking distance to Maunalani Park, the bus line and the Maumae hiking trail. Its first open is this Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.

Happy house hunting! And happy new year.
