Expansive views in Makakilo

Friends of mine, who were recently married, are in the market for a place to call home and have been focusing their hunt in Makakilo. While many reactions are, “Why would you want to live all the way out there?!” They wanted to have more space for when they start a family, and it’s much more affordable than buying in town.

While they’re looking for a single family house and despite the distance from Honolulu, I was intrigued about what kinds of condos and townhouses are available in the neighborhood. Listed 10 days ago, this townhouse at Makakilo Hale 2 caught my eye.

Located at the top of Panana Street, the end unit offers unobstructed views of the ocean and Kapolei. I love the view from the lanai just off the dining area. There’s room for a table and chairs, so you can dine al fresco or relax while taking in the vista. Because it’s surrounded by a grassy lawn, you’ll have more privacy than some of the other units in the complex.

Originally built in 1975, the 1,254-square-foot home was renovated in 2010. New cabinetry, carpeting and wood laminate flooring were installed, along with granite counters in the kitchen and baths, and fresh paint throughout. I’m especially fond of the bright green walls in the kitchen, giving the space a fresh feel.

Even if your family is expanding, you’ll have plenty of room with three bedrooms and one-and-a-half bathrooms. The maintenance fee, which covers sewer and water, is low at $495 a month.

Two parking stalls are included in the price; guest parking is available.

If you’d like to see it in person, there’ll be an open house this Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Click here for details.

Money talk: $279,000 fee simple
