Going Modern in Hawaii Kai

Going Modern in Hawaii Kai

The great outdoors: The home has two large, nicely landscaped yards, as well as two covered lanai and a swimming pool.

A few years ago, I oversaw a fashion shoot at one of these Hawaii Kai houses. We had chosen the home for its clean lines, fresh, modern design and neutral color palette, all of which showed off the bright, fashion-forward frocks we were featuring in the magazine’s layout. The homes (there were only a few at the time) were brand new and were unlike anything else on the island—modern, angular, architecturally interesting. But what impressed me most then, and still does now, is how the homes fit perfectly, like Tetris blocks, into a narrow strip of land sandwiched between Kamehame Ridge and Hawaii Kai Drive, and how smart design resulted in homes that feel anything but cramped.

Like its neighbors, this Jim Schmit-designed home makes efficient use of space thanks to its open floorplan and seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces. Glass windows and sliding doors (there are about 10 sets of sliding glass doors total) bring the outdoors in, contribute to a sense of space and let in plenty of natural light while keeping out any bothersome street noise. From the street, the home doesn’t appear to be that large, but looks can be deceiving: There are four bedrooms, three full baths and one half bath for a total of 2,532 square feet of livable space. In other words, this abode has plenty of room to roam.

The detail work in this house is on point, with hardwood floors, travertine-tile bathrooms and a gourmet kitchen with the requisite top-of-the-line, stainless-steel appliances. And if you can drag yourself away from all of the interior niceties, you’ll discover that the outdoor spaces—two large, landscaped yards, two covered lanai and a swimming pool with a waterfall feature—are the home’s best features.

Money talk: The home is listed at $1,395,000 fee simple.

Open house: The home will be open on Thurs., Feb. 17 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and Sun., Feb. 20 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Listing agent: Sachi Braden, Sachi Hawaii. 596-8801,
