Ultra-luxury rental in Courtyards at Punahou

When this rental came across my desk, I thought perhaps there was an extra zero added to the monthly price. When I doubled checked, my eyes were not mistaken.

$17,500. A month.

What do you get for that pricetag? To start, the three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath penthouse at the Courtyards at Punahou, with more than 3,500 square feet of living space.

But the people who’ll rent this place aren’t looking for a bargain; the target market is the one percent.

“What we’re finding is that high-profile clients from San Francisco or the East Coast have properties on this level available to them on the Mainland – the ultra-luxury rental,” says realtor Kimo Smigielski of Sandwich Isles Realty, Inc.

In Hawaii, there are not a lot out there. “The new mindset is to attract the Mark Zuckerbergs of the world who don’t want to be in a house, want security and a sense of privacy,” says Smigielski. “Maybe an executive who’s relocating here, or maybe it’s transitional to start a new business. Someone who has roots in the islands.”

Built in 1993, the condominium was constructed during the Japanese economic bubble, when opulence and elegance ruled over cost.

Back to the details: A secure elevator opens directly into a private foyer in the unit. The two-story, fully furnished condo has the feel of a single family home, along with panoramic views of the city from the spacious living room – a 25-foot ceiling opens up the space even more.

For added security, there’s an intercom and pass-key systems, 24-hour surveillance and security guards. Amenities include a grand recreation room, barbecue area, gym and swimming pool.

So if you need somewhere to crash while dreaming up the next Facebook or overseeing the construction of your $20-million-dollar beachfront home, this place is for you.

This long-term rental, which will be available beginning in April, has a 6-month minimum lease and comes with two parking stalls. No pets allowed. Click here for details.

Money talk: $17,500 a month, plus taxes
