Open House pick of the week: Pulewa at Mehana

If you're headed out to Kapolei this weekend, stop by the brand new sales office for D.R. Horton's latest project, Pulewa at Mehana.

Out of five styles, there are only three model homes to look at, but that's good enough for the many buyers who have already purchased homes on spec. You can choose from two- and three-bedroom townhomes, all of which are priced under $400,000. Each home offers about 1,400 square feet of living area and you can customize your unit to your liking from D.R. Horton's selection of carpet, countertops, appliances, paint, landscaping and more.

I got to see the models yesterday as the sales staff was still setting up their new office. My choice would be Plan B, the two-story, three bedroom, 2.5 bath unit. Although it's slightly smaller than Plan A, the designers have arranged the spaces to give it a bigger, roomier feeling.

The first of the homes will not be ready until the end of May, and from there, not until September. But until then, the developer will keep building in this master-planned community to bring all 128 units to market.

When you visit the sales office, ask them about the incentives, as you can get up to $10,000 in closing costs. Those who buy in May also get $2,000 in Design Center credit.

There are also affordable units for those who qualify through the City & County of Honolulu's housing program.

Happy house hunting!
