Wake Up and Smell the Coffee: Own a Hawaii Coffee Farm

Own a little coffee farm on Maui.

Published:

A lot of people dream of owning a little farm in paradise, where they can live off the land and maybe make a little money. Well, for those of you who are still dreaming, here’s your chance.

Pililani Kope Farm is a 2-acre lot in Launiupoko at the base of the West Maui mountains. In 2004, Greg and Susy Stille discovered fruit-laden old coffee trees in the back of the property, and began picking the cherries, hand pulping, drying, milling and dabbling in some of the roasting. Today, there are more than 200 coffee trees on the property, and it is a sustainable, organic, “seed to cup” coffee farm.

There’s more to it, of course. As with any coffee farm, there are other fruits and vegetables, such as bananas, papayas, citrus, asparagus, chili peppers, radishes, coconuts, cacao, and even an “ice cream tree” (we aren’t sure what the real name of the fruit is, but it tastes like ice cream).

You get all the equipment with the purchase, plus training on how to pick, dry, roast, and bag the coffee as the Stilles have done all this time. Everything here is done electronically to ensure they provide a consistent product. Their hope, in fact, is to become a sister farm/label to the new owners — the couple loves the business so much that they’re selling this Maui farm so they can expand to a 15-acre farm in Kona.

On property is a three-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1,937-sq. ft. plantation home with a large lanai overlooking the fields to the ocean. The retro style features wood floors, wooden countertops, carved wooden or rattan inlaid doors, high ceilings, a claw foot tub and outdoor shower surrounded by tall bamboo.

There is also a detached two-bedroom, 1.5-bathroom, 1,000 sq. ft. cottage in the back with a 963 sq. ft. wrap-around deck. The Barn is where the coffee farm processing equipment, retail and tasting area are located.
