Love's in the Air

Sometimes you can smell the bread baking as you drive by Love’s Bakery’s headquarters on Middle Street in Kalihi. Inside its doors, an 80-person production crew works nearly around the clock to produce 500,000 pounds of baked products daily, from the company’s signature breads, doughnuts and pies to those of other brands such as Roman Meal and Milton’s. Founded by Scotland native Robert Love after his arrival in Honolulu in 1851, the company was sold to Japan-based First Baking Co. in 1981. In July of this year, Love’s Bakery’s managers announced that they would buy the company, returning it to local ownership.
