Weekend Picks - April 21, 2011
What: You won't find them in theatres near you, but you can catch two acclaimed films oceanside at the Ko Olina. Grab the beach mats, lawn chairs, and some space under the stars for the movies presented by the Hawaii International Film Festival. Make Believe follows teenage magicians to a world competition. Hachi: A Dog's Tale is a heart-tugging and heartwarming Japanese movie about a dog's devotion to its owner. Spring for some popcorn and drinks to benefit Waianae High School's Searider Productions.
When: Shows start at sunset. Make Believe is Friday, Hachi: A Dog's Tale is Saturday.
Where: Ko Olina, on the Grand Lawn near Lagoon 4. Click here for a map.
Details: Tickets are $12. Buy tickets or watch the movie trailers on HIFF's website.
What: When the tsunami waves washed through Northern Japan, dozens of sake breweries were damaged or wiped out. Now, responding to videos from those sake makers, The Sake Shop is offering free samples of spirits from the hard-hit Tohoku region in hopes you'll sip, then support those breweries by taking a bottle home. It's an opportunity to try five different sake with flavors ranging from smooth and fruity to peppery and tart.
When: Saturday, 10 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Sake Shop, 1461 S. King St.
Details: Click here for more detailed descriptions of the sake included in the sampling. Call 808.947.7253 for more information.
What: They didn't win, but their creations (not to mention the catfights and breakdowns) kept us glued to the tv every week of Season 8. Now Hawaii's own Andy South is joined by former competitors, now friends, Mondo, Casanova, Christopher Collins, and Michael Drummond to show us their work after Project Runway. Each designer will send 10 looks down Centerstage and speak about the inspiration behind their latest lines.
When: Saturday, noon.
Where: Ala Moana Center, Centerstage
Details: Read more about the event on Ala Moana Center's website. The designers will travel to Maui Tuesday for a poolside show at the Hyatt Regency. Tickets for that 7 p.m. event start at $25. Click here for more Maui details.
