Weekend Picks - July 21, 2011
A Piece of Cupcake
What: The Ward Warehouse location closed, but this weekend Cupcake Boutique sets up shop in Waikiki. While your little one watches a magic show or picks up a balloon animal, you can browse through cute shoes, toys, dresses and order custom-made Mi Cielo onesies for her, then scoop up goodies from Eden in Love, handmade stationary from Miemiko and Shop Toast for yourself. Then toast to family time with a mother and daughter tea.
When: Saturday, 11 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Where: Waikiki EDITION, 1775 Ala Moana Blvd.
Details: Tickets are $7 presale, $8 at the door. Reservations are required for tea ($20) or for a custom silhouette art ($28). Click here for more information.
Sunday at the Market
What: If waking up by 1 p.m. is still too early for you, Chef Goran Streng's Tango Market has you covered. Starting Sunday, new breakfast goodies such as cheddar and dill scones with smoked salmon, red velvet waffles with strawberries or apples, and a braised beef loco moco will be served all day.
When: Starting Sunday and every Sunday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Where: Tango Market, 1200 Ala Moana Blvd. in Ward Center
Details: Click here to see Tango Market's new brunch menu.
What: The classics take over for the last summer showing outside at Ko Olina. Grab a spot on the grass (don't worry about watching for snakes) for Raiders of the Lost Ark or take a trip to the final frontier with the 2009 version of Star Trek.
When: Indiana Jones shows Friday and Star Trek on Saturday. The movie starts at sundown.
Where: Ko Olina Lagoon 4
Details: Click here to buy $10 tickets or to check out the films for the next outdoor movie night in September.
What: Mark your calendar and raid your closet because tickets for the 5th Annual Fashionista's Market Clothing Swap go on sale next week. Bring in your "looked better in the store than at home" unwanteds and swap them for new "LOVES" from someone else's closet. And for the big fifth anniversary, you can expect some exciting how-to workshops and big prizes with proceeds going to the Leeward Domestic Abuse Shelter.
When: Tickets go on sale Monday. The swap is Sunday, October 16. Breakfast starts at 9 a.m., the swap begins at 11.
Where: Buy your tickets at Fashionista's Market at 1185 Bethel St. The swap will be at the Japanese Cultural Center's Manoa Grand Ballroom.
Details: Bring in your swappable clothes when you go to purchase your $30 ticket. Click here for more information.
What: Impress your friends and avoid that obvious red blob on your summer whites with this glass-bottle ketchup pouring tip. Stick a straw in the bottle until it hits the bottom, shake the bottle, then pour with the straw still inside to break up the vacuum usually keeps your fry dip stuck inside.
Details: Check out 99 uses for other kitchen items from six ways to use tin foil and even those paper doilies you have lying around (?) on Real Simple.com.
Get On Your Feet
What: Pick up some new hot moves at the Summer Salsa in Paradise. Starting at 10 a.m., you can jump into a new dance class every hour then cap it off with a Salsa competition and a chance to strut your stuff.
When: The workshops begin tomorrow. The festival wraps up Sunday night.
Where: Ala Moana Hotel. The competition wraps up at the Hard Rock Cafe.
Details: Tickets are $50 for one-day access to the workshops. Prices vary for other events. To purchase or check out the full schedule click here.
What: Matchmaking takes on a whole new meaning with the launch of Find Your Facemate. The website uses facial recognition software and your picture to match singles with similar features, citing scientific research showing that's who you are attracted to. The service is free, but if you'd rather not commit (perhaps a reason why you're looking for matchmakers), a free demo on the site will see if you and your current crush are facemates.
Details: Try out Find Your Facemate here.
