Belly Up You’ve got a thirst for knowledge – liquid knowledge housed in glass. Yummy cocktails, wine, beer, even occasional fruit juice knowledge (as a chaser) is a must, and when it’s free, you’ve really got to know about it. But an open bar in Honolulu? Not even.

Here to prove you wrong (and teach you a thing or two in the process) is the new Honolulu edition of, providing a weekly listing of free drink events. Originally created by two Brooklynites, the site has been getting New Yorkers smashed since 2005, but you owe your Honolulu hangover to writer Christa Wittmier, who... Read more »

Wine Flight Rules? They’re only fun when you break them. Clubs? They’ve got too many rules. You want to do as you please—fly outer island one day, return on a boat the next—and the only thing you’ve joined lately is your friends out for a glass of wine at Formaggio.

The Hawaiian Wine Club just might make you reconsider that position.

Every month they hand select two hard-to-get premium wines from boutique wineries across the globe, award members 100 Hawaiian Airlines miles per... Read more »

Mean Girls

Girl, you’ve got A.T.T.I.T.U.D.E. In a good way, of course. You work the runway of your life with a confident walk, disdain for petty complaints, and freedom to say and do whatever delights you—convention be damned.

That’s why we know you’ll be fired up about the recently arrived, not-here-for-long 2006 vintage of Bitch, a South Australian red wine made of 100-percent Grenache sourced from Barossa vines that are anywhere from 40 to 60 years old. It’s a grape winemakers say is a bitch to grow, but when as well produced as this one, oozes a delightful, earthy wine... Read more »

Got Your Number

You know you can’t judge a book by its cover. And after that awful bottle of Yellow Daisy (or whatever it was called) Chardonnay, you now know you can’t choose a wine by its label.

Dawn Gomes has found a new way to judge wine: by its number. Her new wine shop, Wine By Numbers, opens today in Waipio. On offer are a whole slew of unusual and hard-to-get wines from small and boutique wineries (you won’t find anything that’s stocked next door at Costco), all of them carrying a numerical rating based on how sweet or dry they are. Gomes tastes every wine she sells and assigns it... Read more »

Thrill of the Taste

You’re not the kind to go on about “low tannins” or “earthy nose” when it comes to wine. But you have, once or twice, bought a wine based solely on the Wine Spectator rating.

Next time, choose something you’ve tasted for yourself – and actually like.

There are plenty of chances. Nearly every night of the week a local wine shop is hosting a free tasting. Here’s the rundown, starting tonight:

Step through the charming courtyard into the wood crate-lined walls of the boutique wine shop... Read more »

Selective Beering

You’ve always been a serial monogamist – with drinks made from grapes. Yet suddenly you’ve developed a wandering eye (the warmer weather may have something to do with it) – and you’re now lusting after cold, frothy brews.

Raise a glass to The Wine Stop, which despite its name is a beverage boutique known for a rotating selection of world beers. Join their specialty Beer Club and for just 15 greenbacks a month you’ll receive a sampling of six 12-ounce beers – plus a five percent discount off two or more subsequent six packs.

Owner and sommelier Kim... Read more »
