First look: MW Restaurant

MW Restaurant, the venture of husband-and-wife team Michelle and Wade Ueoka, officially opens today for lunch and dinner. It's on the Makaloa side of the Shops at Kapiolani development, in a bright, inviting space of tall windows, high ceilings and an open kitchen. There, you'll see Wade directing traffic in the kitchen and Michelle, despite the stunning amount of counter space, confining herself to a small square of real estate, plating desserts.

We attended the friends and family soft opening; here's a look at some of the dishes:

In the foreground: pickled beets with an ume beet vinaigrette, dill and goat cheese. In the background: fried oysters with chili mayonnaise, pickled tomato sauce and namasu.

Spicy tuna, ahi poke, ikura and uni, topped with rice crackers

Oxtail soup: Unsatified by the soups he found around Oahu, Wade set out to make the version he wanted. If this is his perfection—oxtail soup with corned beef, pork belly and lots of peanuts—no wonder nothing out there lived up to his standards.

Uni pasta with housemade linguine, Kauai shrimp, shiso and nori.

A deconstructed cheesecake of li-hing ume jelly filled strawberries, strawberry yogurt sorbet and graham cracker crumbs made with kiawe flour (ground from kiawe pods and gluten-free).
