Open House pick of the week: Kaimuki

This retro home is a cute example of Kaimuki’s charm, but with all the elements of contemporary living inside. Although it was built in 1927, the owners—who have owned it for about 30 years—have maintained it with ongoing upgrades to keep it looking new. (Click here for details.)

“It’s not like they overhauled the house in just one year,” says realtor Yukiko Sato of Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties. “The paint is new, and all of the electrical wiring is new. But the home’s upgrades have always been a work in progress, and it’s been well-kept.”

The two-bedroom, one-bath home is just 808 square feet, but the lot is 4,643 square feet (which includes a two-car parking area, which is rare in Kaimuki). There’s good ventilation throughout the house, so there’s no need for air conditioning.

“For added storage, the home has an attic,” Sato says. “It’s a full-sized attic, so you can stand up straight and walk around. There’s also a separate storage shed outside that can be used as a greenhouse.”

It’s located on the lower part of Kokohead Ave. so you can walk to the various shops and restaurants in the area; it gets 85 on Walkscore.com so it’s legitimately walkable. It’s high enough, though, to get you ocean, city, and Diamond Head views.
