Rare rental home in Niu Valley

Niu Valley is a far cry from its dairy farm days in the 1950s. Development since then has turned it into a suburban neighborhood that still maintains a kamaaina feel.

This rare three-bedroom, two-bathroom rental home on Kawaikui Street, which just became available, offers the convenience of being close to town if you commute and the luxury of having a spacious, fenced-in yard with mountain views.

The 1,560-square-foot house, built in 1959, has been owned by one family since its construction. The current owner refurbished the home within the last year, incorporating its retro roots while creating a modern, open floor plan. This is the first time it is being offered for rent since the renovation, which included new carpeting, fresh paint and new kitchen appliances.

A lot of little details set this single-level home apart. “There are built-in drawers in the dining area and bedroom that are original,” says realtor Nikki O'Rourke. There are large picture windows in the living room with wood jalousies below.

There’s also a neat architectural detail left from the original design – an open-shelving room divider in between the kitchen and living room. The entryway, with travertine flooring, is set up with a free-standing wall, so it feels as if there is a separate foyer.

Other features include an alarm system, laundry room and the house is wired throughout – ready for cable and Internet.

The neighborhood is quiet and there is ample on-street parking for guests. The 9,000-square-foot lot has a carport with room for two cars, a 250-square-foot covered lanai and papaya trees in the backyard.

Located within walking distance to schools, the house is only two blocks away from Niu Valley Park – great for kids.

If you’re a surfer or wind surfer, you'll dig the fact that Kawaikui Beach Park is just a little more than half a mile away. So you can grab your board and head to the sparsely populated breaks – Secrets and Toes – just off the shore.

But, sorry, smokers and pet-owners – neither are allowed.

The rental requires a one-year lease and is available for viewing by appointment only. (Click here for details.)

Money talk: $3,300 a month, includes yard service
