Dramatic views from Waialae Nui

When you live in Hawaii, you might get jaded by the awesome views that so many homes have. And yet, when I stepped into this Waialae Nui home, I had to suck in my breath at the panorama that greeted me.

It’s not a grand McMansion; the exterior facing the street is actually kind of plain, but it doesn’t matter once you walk inside. Nearly every room has an unobstructed view of Diamond Head, the ocean and all of Waikiki.

“Many people look to Waialae Iki or Hawaii Loa Ridge for a view like this,” says Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties realtor Cliff Colvin. “This is just as stunning, better priced and more convenient to town.”

There are high, koa-wood ceilings in the open living area, and a classic design that feels luxurious but casual. The two-story residence was built in 1973 but renovated about seven years ago with designer touches—which seems natural, since owner Diane Robinson (yes, from the historic, royal Robinson family) bought it from home style expert Cathy Lee.

Downstairs is a second living area that opens out to the covered lanai and dramatic infinity pool, with just enough yard to enjoy but not so big that you will be spending your weekends mowing or weeding (the lot is 9,618 square feet). There’s also a park-like lot next door that belongs to the Association, so you could theoretically use it but not have to care for it.

Upstairs, the large, functional kitchen has a walk-in pantry and ample granite counter space. Downstairs, the kitchenette—more like a bar—hides the washer and dryer.

“A laundry area in the bar? That’s one way to make my chores more pleasant,” says realtor Isabella Forster of Keller Williams.

There are five bedrooms and three bathrooms in this 3,088-square-foot residence. Its first open house is this Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. (Click here for details.)
