Open house pick of the week: Downtown Honolulu

When this funky studio in the historic Hawaii Times Building came across my desk, it made me think of the loft-type spaces I’ve seen in Manhattan.

You can live and work all in the same place, since the building is zoned for both residential and commercial use. Built in 1896 and almost a century later renovated by architect Norman Lacayo (his Honolulu credits include Harbor Court and Honolulu Tower Condominium), the building houses 16 other units, but this is the only one that’s been converted into a living space.

Located on the second floor and away from the street, the corner condo features 12-foot ceilings and large windows with views of Honolulu Harbor.

“It’s a really unique unit,” says realtor Lisa Van Den Heuvel of Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties. “It’s great for a professional person who wants to take advantage of the convenience of living and working downtown.”

You couldn’t be closer to all of the shops, restaurants and bars located downtown. The address scores a 91 on Walkscore.com, which rates it a “walker’s paradise.”

The unit will be sold as is. The kitchen area has a refrigerator but still needs a stove and sink, so you can finish the space to your own specifications.

The bathroom is attractively designed with gray stone tiles and a white porcelain pedestal sink. It also houses the washer and dryer.

Fuzz factor: Pets are allowed, subject to the board’s approval.

The maintenance fee ($821 a month) notably includes central A/C and electricity, along with the usual suspects. There is no parking stall included with the condo, but there’s plenty of parking available in public garages in the neighborhood.

You can see it for yourself this Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. They’ll also be a special brokers’ open house (open to the public) on Wednesday, March 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. Click here for details.

Happy house hunting!
