Kona Bay Hawaii to hold store-wide sale on Black Friday
If we had a time machine, oh, the things we would do. Shred our hypercolor T-shirts. Stop that tramp-stamp tattoo. Ditch the loser boyfriend who pledged his undying love to us... and three other girls.
One thing we won't have to do: travel back in time to score sleek, uber-soft vintage Aloha shirts thanks to Kona Bay Hawaii and its store-wide Black Friday sale.
Owner KC Kiuchi stumbled across his first Aloha shirt in 1987 in a second-hand shop in Japan and eventually amassed nearly 300 shirts, all circa 1930s to 1950s with slim cuts, intricate prints and buttery rayon fabrics. Those collectibles served as the ultimate prototype when he started manufacturing his own vintage-inspired Aloha shirts in Hawaii in 2001.
Kiuchi's one-year-old Waikiki retail shop is a blast from the past with walls dotted with black-and-white photographs of iconic, Aloha-shirt-sporting celebrities like Frank Sinatra and Montgomery Clift (above). He works closely with a Japanese fabric company to replicate famous prints using overprinting or classic discharge printing techniques for rich, saturated colors.
Other highlights include new, original prints (think Andy-Warhol-esque surfer motifs and Kona-based street signs), a rack of petite-perfect extra-extra-small men's shirts, women's shirts and dresses, and Kiuchi's entire vintage collection stored in back.
Stop in on Black Friday and get 20 percent off everything in store, vintage shirts excluded. The sale, much like his $4,500 extra-large, deadstock Hale Hawaii Aloha shirt, is incredibly rare.
And doesn't come with a time machine.
Aloha shirts range from $54.99 keiki to $89.99 men's. Take 20 percent off the entire store, vintage shirts excluded, this Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Kona Bay Hawaii is located at 444 Ena Rd. Paid parking lot to the left of the store, metered parking on Hobron Ln. For more information, call (808) 223-3390 or visit KonaBayHawaii.com.
