Kailua Living boutique mixes beachy apparel with home goods

Kailua Living Boutique

When one door closes, another door opens. No wait, we got that wrong.

When one store closes, another store opens. Yep, much better.

Case in point: after Kai Boutique lost its lease next to the Kailua post office, co-owner Shanon Jenkins Schubert decided to regroup and open a relaxed apparel and home shop, this time with Local Living Design Studio's Michele Baginski.

The pricey resortwear? Gone. Instead, you'll find racks of beachy bohemian pieces - think locally designed Lani Lau dip-dyed maxis, gauzy Bali Designs tunics and, coming soon, Mikoh and Tori Praver bikinis. Accessories are also more lifestyle than luxe with Jeanne Beatrice straw totes perfect for farmers market and beach goers, yogi-approved Barefoot mats and Baktuli microfiber towels. The custom jewelry case is stocked with locally made Rudraksha coral bangles and turquoise prayer beads by Gypset.

The front of the store is a beach cottage's dream: floor-to-ceiling shelves brimming with Baginski's signature hand-stamped and digitally printed pillows and bags, colorful Jaipur rugs and upcycled "Life is better at the beach" signs by Kailua-based Coastal Drifter.

And don't miss the art. Paintings are sprinkled throughout the store with a rotating gallery by local artists in back, so you can take a few moments to admire works by Kathryn Rone and Shannon E. McCarthy while sipping freshly brewed illy espresso (ohh yeah, they have that too).

The hardest part may be finding it. There's no designated lot, so you'll need to park on the street or in the municipal lot around the block, sneak past a bus stop and hop a gate.

Hey, whatever it takes to get your foot in the door.

Kailua Living is open Mondays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sundays, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at 22 Oneawa St. For more information, call (808) 261-2200 or visit Kailua Living on Facebook.
