Open House Pick of the Week: East Honolulu

Two dream homes offer large spaces and modern luxury.

I had a hard time picking a featured open house this week: Two of the outstanding submissions are luxury homes—the kind most of us can only dream of owning—but one is on a mountain, and the other is on the waterfront. And they're both similarly priced, give or take a few hundred thousand dollars. Since they’re both in East Honolulu, I’d say you should see both.

One is on Kalanianaole Hwy. in Paiko Lagoon, a four-bedroom, four-bathroom single-level waterfront home on a 10,000-square foot lot. The home has 3,134 square feet of living area, and there’s a 1,000-square-foot covered patio for outdoor entertaining. (The patio is larger than my entire apartment.)

The home is simply beautiful, not surprising since it was designed by Peter Vincent. There’s also a bit of tropical landscaping, not a lot, but just enough to give it pops of color, especially in the courtyard that surrounds the pool.

The second is up the hill in Na Pali Haweo. Whereas the first listing had more of a contemporary, Island design, this one is more grand, with cathedral ceilings, double staircases, and two-story windows.

The four-bedroom, four-bathroom, 5,153-square-foot home matches its surroundings, though: It sits on a 26,690-square-foot rim lot with breathtaking views of the ocean, Koko Head, Diamond Head and the Marina.

Two of the bedrooms are master suites on the second floor with private lanais, so you can admire that view every chance you get. The overall floor plan of the house is very open, with a large kitchen and ample living spaces so you can do some serious entertaining. This is evident in the long driveway and gigantic parking area—and why not? The lot is so huge, you might as well have lots of space for all your cars.
